The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus's contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black). The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful. This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz. Plot: As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel's haberdashery. Marrying the late owner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela's impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 1 ) 最后的浪漫主义者？
先扯点题外话，一个寒假，一本书和一部电影。有转折意味的寒假，一本书则是普鲁斯的那本《玩偶》，一部电影则是大卫·芬奇的那部奥斯卡大热《社交网络》。三样东西都把我震撼到了。
我认为，这部电影改编的不是很成功，甚至让人有点失望。删减了原著太多，也许这部极品佳作不适合让一部2个半小时的影片来诠释。影片的场景没有表达出两个世界的差别，也许是视频画质的原因，也许是影片预算的限制。但，缺了巴黎这个重要的桥段是不应该的，缺了巴黎也就缺了盖斯特这个沃库尔斯基心中的另一个理想，同时也让结尾显得有点莫名其妙，远没有原著那种对俗世彻底失望的感觉。
窃以为原著最大的特点就是人物的心理描写和自述性章节，例如有代表性的《老掌柜的回忆》，当然还有沃库尔斯基内心的挣扎和伊扎贝娜虚伪的真面目。这些在影片全然看不见，或者很难看见。
缺了斯塔夫斯卡这个重要配角同样不应该。沃库尔斯基不敢接受斯塔夫斯卡圣洁的爱情，这正说明当时的波兰社会是多么的腐朽，正直的人不能结合。而影片却把这个重要人物给略了。
表现人物方面是欠缺的。热茨基这个人物就刻画的不好，其对沃库尔斯基命运的关心是远远没有原著那么表现的深切的。把这个老浪漫主义的从军经历避而不同也是不应该的，虽然影片有句话提到了他曾为军人的事实。老掌柜的曾为匈牙利步兵的经历对浪漫主义是有很好的诠释的。沃库尔斯基和伊扎贝娜刻画的还算合格，这得益于Mariusz Dmochowski和Beata Tyszkiewicz身上的那股气质，这两个角色就是为他俩量身定制的。至于其他角色的刻画则是乏力的很，例如奥霍茨基。
犹太人。这个原著的重要组成部分在本片中算是黯然失色了。当时的波兰处于沙皇的统治之下，实现波兰王国的重新统一则是社会各界人士所操心的议题。而犹太人，由于其经商的天才，至少可以挽救被外国霸占的波兰工业。但，正如同样身为犹太人的舒曼医生所说，犹太人是天才也是流氓和混蛋，所以选择犹太人来实现波兰复兴是否正确也是值得仔细考虑的。可惜，影片中很难看到犹太人的两面性。
最后，再说点题外话。波兰要复兴，三个选择，以拿破仑家族为代表的国外势力，波兰的犹太人，纯正的波兰人。波兰人是浪漫的，一方面成就了亚当·密茨凯维奇这样的伟大诗人，一方面也导致了这个国家深重的灾难。波兰之所以强大不起来，除了其不幸的地理位置之外，毕竟毗邻强大的沙俄和当时欧洲顶级强国德国，波兰贵族也是一个很重要的原因。波兰贵族，这个群体是极端腐朽和不可救药的。他们鼓励好吃懒做，敌视辛勤劳动。而且他们屁都不懂，只知道挥霍钱财。
影片沃库尔斯基同奥霍茨基的对话中提到了这么个故事：两个朋友，一个在敖德萨，一个在托博尔斯克。一个想见另外一人，便动身前往对方所居住的城市，谁知对方也是同样的想法，因此两位知己错过了。多年之后，两人在莫斯科相遇了，因为两人住进了同一家酒店。命运总是会嘲弄嘲弄芸芸众生。但是，怀有同样理想的人最终会遇见的。
当伙计时突然去上学，上得好好的又去搞政治，被流放后又娶了个寡妇，富裕的生活不要要跑去保加利亚冒险.....这就是沃库尔斯基，一个浪漫主义者，一个波兰式浪漫主义者。热茨基还是死了，他是最后一个浪漫主义者吗？

珍惜眼前
他貌似手段强硬，实则内心柔软，他也努力在高尚和卑微之间、金钱和爱情中作出折中而正确的抉择；编年史折射的个人流年，最终他选择自我放逐；后半部意识的流动、内心活动很精彩，首尾呼应，平移镜头很美，剪辑甚妙；虽没看过原著，但部分场景的衔接略有突兀，看得出删减之处。
哈斯意识流的潜入意识深处作品会更有魅力
在假装扩展我们体验的同时，也能提供娱乐及凝聚力。作为个本质不符于世的浪漫主义者，徘徊在堕落的贵族与怜悯的影子。他怀抱有一大片忧郁的土地，像触手可及掠过的风，梦醒不会无痕。最后抛却放逐，甚至决然地明白：每个人都是浸着腐朽皮囊的玩偶。流动文学。
私以为是哈斯电影转型的起点，低角度平行移动，“凝滞”的时空，时间的空间转向，伯格森“绵延”
@Reflet Medicis修复后质感太棒！古装历史剧典范，虽然两个半小时但感觉表现大图景还是仓促了，看完有点想刷原著，还是更适合拍成电视剧，或者在剧本层面更多聚焦。虽然没落贵族和新兴资产阶级碰撞的故事有些俗套，但放在波兰的历史框架下饶有况味，中国还友情客串了一番，值得把玩。低角度镜头，饿殍遍野与浮华虚荣的凋零之美工整又典范。

懒惰，自私的波兰贵族们从骨子里瞧不起生意人，即使你很会赚钱。爱上戴着虚伪面具的女子真是可悲。看的出来本片有删减部分，喜欢片中两处的平移长镜头
終於在很多年後的一天，他們兩個人在命運的安排下有機會住在了同一間旅館的隔壁，只是故事中的二人相遇了，現實裡的人卻沒能。只有他為他哭。可他只是看到了他一眼，聲音都沒能發出來倒地離去。
诡谲的配乐+街道布景如修复的上世纪初影片+一贯的哈斯式的距离感的移镜=赏心悦目的观影体验；在一个放荡的国家，勤劳者给堕落者打工，爱了但不全爱，结果“玩偶”竟是我自己，还是赶紧远离渣女吧。
